Unlike a simple exchange of possessions, a giveaway is an act of generosity intended to care for others, strengthen community relationships and help maintain balance with the world around us.
Ivan shares the powerful story of his parents’ first giveaway at Smallboy Camp, where they gave their best car to a family without transportation. That night, his mother dreamed of four dogs performing an honour dance. Each time their paws touched the ground, her spirit rose higher—showing her that giving releases the things that weigh the spirit down.
Through stories of powwows, a Navajo first-laugh ceremony and an unforgettable classroom lesson involving a $20 bill and a $59.99 coaching jacket, Ivan explains that generosity should never be motivated by the expectation of a reward. Blessings may return, but the real purpose is helping another person.
Ivan also reflects on his late father, Fred Eagletail, whose kindness shaped both his family and his years of service as a minor chief of the Tsuut’ina Nation. The episode asks a timely question: what might our society become if those with the most embraced the responsibility to share with those who have the least?
