Construction is expected to begin as early as Monday, Aug. 10, on improvements to the intersection of West Chestermere Drive and Chestermere Station Way.
The start date remains subject to weather and the contractor’s schedule, according to an Aug. 5 notice from the City of Chestermere. The City has not yet finalized the timing of lane restrictions, detours or any possible intersection closures.
The project will include the design and installation of traffic signals, a southbound left-turn lane and related work at the intersection. The upgrades are intended to improve traffic movement and help the road network accommodate future transportation needs as Chestermere continues to grow.
For residents, the immediate change will be the arrival of construction crews and equipment in an area used to reach nearby homes, businesses and services. The intersection connects West Chestermere Drive with the commercial area along Chestermere Station Way, making advance information about traffic changes particularly important for drivers who use the route regularly.
The City says it will work with the contractor and provide advance notice once the detailed construction schedule is confirmed. That information is expected to identify lane restrictions, detours, road impacts and any periods when the intersection may need to close.
Council approved the project’s original funding in June 2025, allocating $730,000 from the federal Canada Community-Building Fund. The council resolution identified traffic signals, the new turning lane and associated construction as the work to be completed.
The budget was revisited at council’s July 14, 2026, meeting. Council approved a further $100,000, bringing the total authorized budget to $830,000. The motion was carried following a request from the City’s Community Growth and Infrastructure administration.
The City’s public notice did not identify a project completion date, name the contractor or provide a breakdown of the additional cost. It also did not say how long individual traffic restrictions could remain in place. Those details may become clearer once the contractor’s construction schedule is complete.
The intersection has appeared in Chestermere’s transportation planning discussions for several years. In 2021, council directed administration to examine options, including a roundabout or traffic circle, to address traffic safety at the location. The traffic-signal project now moving into construction is the improvement authorized under the current capital plan.
Chestermere’s 2025 Transportation Planning Study also identified signal improvements at West Chestermere Drive and Station Way among its future recommendations. Council accepted that study for information in December 2025. The document looked more broadly at transportation needs associated with population growth, changing land uses and future travel patterns.
Although the long-term purpose is to improve how the intersection operates, construction may produce short-term delays. Until a traffic-management plan is released, motorists should avoid assuming that their usual route or travel time will remain unchanged.
Drivers approaching the work area should watch for temporary signs, equipment and workers and be prepared to follow traffic-control directions. Residents can also check the City’s website and official notices for schedule changes before travelling through the intersection.
The project is a relatively small piece of Chestermere’s wider transportation network, but it is located at a well-used connection between residential and commercial areas. How effectively the City communicates closures and detours will be as important to residents in the coming weeks as the finished intersection will be over the longer term.
