Rainbow Road South Closure to Affect Drivers and Pathway Users

10 August 2026

Stormwater construction will bring a full road closure, detours and temporary pathway restrictions By Stephen Jeffrey

Drivers and pathway users in south Chestermere are being asked to plan ahead as a major stormwater project brings several weeks of traffic and access changes along Rainbow Road South.

The City of Chestermere says Rainbow Road South will be fully closed between Waterford Boulevard and South Shore Drive, near the bridge, from Aug. 20 through Sept. 4. The road will be impassable to vehicles while crews excavate a large trench and install underground infrastructure.

Posted detours will be in place. The city is advising motorists to use alternate routes and allow additional travel time, particularly during busy commuting periods.

Residents who regularly travel between Waterford and South Shore communities may want to review their route before closure begins on Aug. 20.

Pathway users will see earlier and longer disruptions. The west side of the Western Headworks Canal pathway, on the train bridge side of Rainbow Road, is scheduled to close from Aug. 13 to Sept. 30.

The pathway on the east side, between Rainbow Road and the Edible Garden, is expected to remain closed from Aug. 13 to Oct. 30.

Further road restrictions are planned as work progresses. Waterford Boulevard at Rainbow Road is scheduled to close from Sept. 3 to Sept. 10.

After the full Rainbow Road closure ends, periodic single-lane traffic is expected between Waterford Boulevard and South Shore Drive from Sept. 4 to Sept. 30. South Shore Drive, between Rainbow Road and South Shore View, is also expected to operate with single-lane traffic from Sept. 7 to Sept. 30.

The closures are part of stormwater infrastructure improvements in south Chestermere. While the work is underway, residents should watch for construction crews, obey temporary signs and avoid entering closed areas.

The city cautions that all construction dates are estimates. Weather, site conditions or changes in the scope of work may affect the schedule.

Current road and construction information is available through the road reports section of the City of Chestermere website.
