With the recent blast of cold weather, Chestermere RCMP are reminding residents not to leave vehicles unattended while running or with the keys left in them.
"Within the past two weeks we had four vehicles that were stolen and we can say on three out of four of those vehicles that they were either left running with the keys in them or unlocked with the keys in them," said Chestermere RCMP Detachment Commander Staff Sgt. Mark Wielgosz.
He said that it's not just a matter of an insurance claim when unattended vehicles are stolen. Often stolen vehicles are used in the commission of other crimes.
"Our concern is what is being done with these vehicles after they're stolen," said Wielgosz, "they're typically involved in further crimes."
"So, if we can again rely on the assistance of the public to be vigilant and lock up their belongings it certainly goes a long way in improving our community's safety," he said.
