Minimum wage in Alberta increased by $1.40 per hour to $15 per hour on Oct. 1.
The raise fulfills the NDP's campaign promise from 2015 to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour.
"Every hard-working Albertan deserves to be paid fairly," said Minister of Labour Christina Gray.
"The $15 minimum wage will make life more affordable for women, single parents, families and everyone who has been working a full-time job or more but is still struggling to put food on the table and pay their rent," she said.
According to the provincial government, the minimum wage increase will help Alberta's economy.
"Every extra dollar that goes into the pockets of everyday Albertans gets invested back into their community and the local economy," said a Ministry of Labour press release.
A person working a 40-hour work week will earn $2,912 more each year at the increased minimum wage.
