Drivers using Chestermere Boulevard at the Trans-Canada Highway should prepare for reduced speeds and minor delays as construction begins near the Highway 1 interchange.
The City of Chestermere says temporary eastbound lane closures and traffic shifts are scheduled from July 10 until approximately Oct. 15, although the timeline remains tentative and may change because of weather or construction conditions.
The work includes improvements to the highway off-ramp and widening of the median near the interchange. At least one lane is expected to remain available, but motorists may encounter changing traffic patterns as crews move through different stages of the project.
The interchange is one of Chestermere’s busiest entrances and serves residents travelling between the city, Highway 1 and communities east of Calgary.
Drivers are being asked to watch for temporary signs, follow posted speed limits and allow additional travel time, particularly during the morning and evening commuting periods.
The interchange work is taking place alongside several other road projects in and around Chestermere.
Surface work has also resulted in temporary lane restrictions on Township Road 240 between Range Road 284 and Waterbury Road, while construction continues along portions of Chestermere Boulevard and Merganser Drive.
The overlapping projects may create delays on routes commonly used as alternatives when traffic becomes congested.
Residents can check the City of Chestermere’s road-report page for updated closure dates and construction information. Alberta 511 also provides current provincial highway conditions and traffic advisories.
The City currently describes delays at the interchange as minor, but conditions may vary throughout the project.
Motorists should avoid sudden lane changes near construction zones and provide additional space for workers and equipment.
The work is expected to continue into the fall, making patience another piece of required driving equipment for Chestermere commuters.
