Alberta SPCA and Chestermere RCMP Investigate Kitten Cruelty Case

19 June 2026

Authorities ask residents near West Creek area to check for information that may assist investigation By Stephen Jeffrey

A disturbing discovery along a Chestermere walking trail has led to an animal cruelty investigation involving the Alberta SPCA and Chestermere RCMP.

Investigators are asking for the public’s help after a young kitten was found abandoned in a garbage container near the pathway area between West Creek Springs and West Creek Close on Saturday, June 13.

According to investigators, the animal was a six-week-old grey tabby kitten. Authorities believe the kitten was placed in the area sometime between Friday morning and Saturday afternoon.

The circumstances surrounding the kitten’s death have prompted an animal cruelty investigation. Officials are now looking for anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area or who may have photos or video that could help determine what happened.

Residents living near pathways, parks and public spaces are increasingly making use of security cameras, doorbell cameras and vehicle cameras. Investigators are encouraging anyone in the West Creek area who may have captured footage during the timeframe to review their recordings.

Animal cruelty investigations can involve several agencies depending on the circumstances. The Alberta SPCA investigates concerns involving the welfare and treatment of animals across much of the province, while police agencies may become involved when there is potential evidence of a criminal offence.

Under Canadian law, offences involving cruelty to animals can include causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animal. Each investigation depends on the evidence gathered and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

For many residents, pets are considered members of the family, making reports involving harm to animals especially difficult for the community. Cases involving young animals often generate strong emotional reactions, but officials remind the public that investigations must be based on evidence and verified information.

Community assistance can often play an important role in these types of cases. Even a small detail, such as seeing a vehicle in an unusual location, noticing someone near a pathway, or capturing movement on a camera, may help investigators establish a timeline.

Residents are also encouraged to report concerns involving animal welfare when they see situations where an animal may be injured, abandoned, neglected, or at risk.

Anyone with information related to the Chestermere investigation is asked to contact Chestermere RCMP at 403-204-8777.

Those wishing to provide information anonymously can contact Crime Stoppers. Tips submitted through Crime Stoppers do not require the caller to provide their name.

The investigation remains ongoing.
